Podimo Acquires Dutch Podcast Production House Tonny Media Following a Partnership Between the two companies

The companies have been partners since 2022, with Tonny Media producing exclusive shows for Podimo

Podimo, the Copenhagen-based spoken audio subscription service, has announced its acquisition of Tonny Media, a prominent Dutch podcast production house. This acquisition marks a significant milestone in the partnership between the two companies, which began in 2022. The deal is expected to enhance Podimo's presence in the Netherlands, where the company has already achieved profitability. Both companies will continue to operate independently while combining their sales efforts and expertise to provide a more diverse and engaging range of content for Dutch listeners.

Tonny Media: A Creative Powerhouse

Founded in 2020 by Titus van Dijk, Jaap Reesema, and Sander Schimmelpenninck, Tonny Media quickly established itself as a key player in the Dutch media landscape. Known for its innovative podcast formats and ability to engage wide audiences, Tonny Media manages its shows' concept, production, and promotion entirely in-house. The company is celebrated for producing podcasts featuring well-known Dutch personalities, such as “De Zelfspodcast” presented by Sander Schimmelpenninck and Jaap Reesema, “Geuze & Gorgels” with Monica Geuze and Kaj Gorgels, and “Marc-Marie & Isa Vinden Iets en Aaf & Lies lossen het wel weer op.” These shows will continue under the leadership of CEO Titus van Dijk, who is set to maintain the company’s creative direction while leveraging Podimo’s resources to fuel further growth.

Podimo’s Journey in the Netherlands

Podimo launched its service in the Netherlands in 2022 and quickly made a significant impact by acquiring Dag en Nacht Media, another influential Dutch podcast production house. This acquisition brought in additional revenue streams, including advertising revenue, which contributed to Podimo's rapid success in the Dutch market. The company announced that it had achieved profitability in the Netherlands, a notable accomplishment that underscores the strength of its business model and the appeal of its content offerings. Podimo now boasts a catalog of 100 exclusive and in-house productions in the Netherlands, including popular titles like “Moordcast,” “Man Man Man, de podcast,” “Alle Geschiedenis Ooit,” and “Bankzitters: Achter de Schermen.”

The Strategic Acquisition of Tonny Media

The acquisition of Tonny Media is seen as a logical next step in Podimo’s strategy to support and expand its presence in the Netherlands. Having already established a strong partnership in 2022, with Tonny Media producing exclusive shows for Podimo, the acquisition further solidifies their joint commitment to delivering high-quality content to Dutch audiences. The companies plan to combine their strengths, particularly in sales and advertising, to attract larger partners and provide more revenue opportunities for creators. This strategic move is expected to enhance the diversity of content available on Podimo’s platform, offering a mix of exclusive and open RSS shows tailored to the preferences of Dutch listeners.

A Shared Vision for Growth

Both Podimo and Tonny Media share a vision for the future of podcasting that is rooted in creativity, innovation, and a deep understanding of audience needs. Tonny Media’s CEO, Titus van Dijk, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating that it aligns with the company’s ambition to grow and expand its reach. Van Dijk highlighted that Tonny Media’s dream of building an “idea factory” where creative ambitions can be realized is well on its way to being fulfilled. However, the company is eager to continue evolving and sees Podimo as the ideal partner to support its international ambitions and provide more revenue streams for creators.

Podimo’s Chief Content Officer, Sachin Doshi, emphasized the importance of the Netherlands as a market for the company. He noted that while subscriptions remain the core of Podimo’s business, providing creators with more options for monetization is key to their growth. The acquisition of Tonny Media is part of Podimo’s broader strategy to collaborate with like-minded companies across different markets, enhancing creator opportunities, content diversity, and audience engagement.

The acquisition of Tonny Media by Podimo represents a significant development in the Dutch podcasting landscape. Both companies are poised to benefit from this strategic move, with Podimo expanding its presence and content offerings in the Netherlands, and Tonny Media gaining the support it needs to continue its innovative work. As the companies move forward together, they remain committed to providing Dutch listeners with a diverse range of high-quality content while supporting the growth and success of creators in the ever-evolving media landscape.
