HelloBetter Secures €3 Million to Boost AI-Powered Mental Health Innovation
Funding advances development of MindFIT, an AI-driven solution for personalized mental wellness
In a substantial boost to its mission of expanding accessible mental health care, HelloBetter, a global leader in digital medical products for mental health, announced a new round of innovation funding amounting to €3 million. This investment will accelerate the development of "MindFIT," an ambitious digital wellness product aimed at fostering a more personalized, adaptive, and effective mental health experience for users. As part of HelloBetter’s wider portfolio, MindFIT stands out for its transdiagnostic and modular approach, intended to make digital mental health care more responsive to the diverse needs of individuals at various stages of their mental health journey. The funding, awarded through Brandenburg’s ProFIT program and supported by the Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB), includes both public grants and loans.
MindFIT’s introduction reflects HelloBetter’s commitment to pioneering innovative solutions in mental health care, particularly through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create a more user-centric experience. The MindFIT project, which launched in early 2024 with a total budget of €4.6 million, is expected to produce its initial research results by 2025.
A New Era in Mental Health: Transdiagnostic and Modular Solutions
While many digital therapies are designed to address specific mental health conditions, MindFIT differentiates itself with a transdiagnostic model that is both modular and adaptable. This means that rather than delivering a linear, single-condition therapy, MindFIT provides support that is flexible enough to address a range of challenges, from anxiety and depression to stress and sleep disorders, often before clinical symptoms fully develop. This approach is intended to be beneficial for anyone aiming to maintain or improve their mental health, providing early-stage support that can adapt as individual needs evolve over time.
Through its modular structure, MindFIT allows users to customize their engagement with different therapeutic modules. This design enables users to navigate a non-linear experience, progressing at their own pace and addressing issues based on personal needs and preferences. The program's transdiagnostic foundation allows it to treat a spectrum of symptoms, aiming to deliver timely and relevant content through various mental health challenges and across different severity levels.
The Role of AI: Personalization and Engagement Through Machine Learning
At the core of MindFIT’s innovative approach is its reliance on AI technologies, including machine learning models and semantic similarity analysis, to build a highly personalized experience. In contrast to traditional digital health applications, which often present a one-size-fits-all treatment path, MindFIT leverages AI to gain insight into users’ individual needs and adjust interventions accordingly. With data-informed recommendations and personalized feedback, MindFIT provides small, well-timed interventions based on past user input to help users remain engaged and progress meaningfully.
This approach seeks to address one of the primary challenges of digital mental health interventions: user dropout. By tailoring recommendations and pacing to each individual’s preferences and progress, HelloBetter aims to increase user satisfaction, retention, and mental health outcomes. The hope is that by providing more relevant content, MindFIT will serve as an accessible, continuous support tool for mental wellness, in much the same way a life coach might.
A Key Component in HelloBetter’s Digital Stepped-Care Model
MindFIT also plays a central role in HelloBetter’s broader digital stepped-care model, which is designed to offer mental health support across various levels of need. This model, which aligns with HelloBetter’s long-term vision, seeks to provide accessible, effective options for individuals aiming to improve their mental health, whether through preventive care or escalated interventions. Should preventive measures be insufficient, users can transition through the model to access more intensive, clinically supported treatment options.
For cases where in-person therapy may not be feasible or immediately available, HelloBetter’s stepped-care approach also includes blended care solutions. These combine digital health applications, like DiGA-certified programs, with telemedical support from therapists, who receive guidance from interactive AI tools. This approach is aimed at offering individuals an integrated and seamless experience, meeting a range of mental health needs in both preventive and acute treatment contexts.
A Track Record of Research-Backed Digital Health Solutions
Founded in 2015 by psychologists Prof. Dr. David Ebert, Dr. Hanne Horvath, and Dr. Elena Heber, HelloBetter has established itself as a frontrunner in the digital health sector. Dr. Ebert, a professor at the Technical University of Munich and an authority in digital mental health care, has been instrumental in advancing evidence-based digital therapy solutions. HelloBetter’s portfolio of online therapy programs, which span a wide range of mental health conditions, from depression and anxiety to chronic pain and vaginismus, is among the most comprehensively studied in the field.
HelloBetter's adherence to rigorous research has positioned it as an industry leader. With 30 randomized controlled trials published in peer-reviewed journals, HelloBetter has proven the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of its programs. This focus on evidence-based design has led to the recognition of six of HelloBetter’s programs as Digital Health Applications (DiGA) by the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), making them available by prescription at no cost to insured adults across Germany.
In 2024, HelloBetter also gained significant acknowledgment by being named a “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum, a testament to the company’s impact and leadership in digital mental health solutions.
As mental health issues continue to affect people across the globe, HelloBetter’s latest project exemplifies how digital health can expand the reach and flexibility of mental health support. MindFIT, with its AI-driven personalization and modular design, is a forward-thinking response to the need for accessible, proactive mental health care that adapts to the individual. With its ongoing commitment to innovation, HelloBetter is poised to help bridge gaps in mental health care, offering resources that are both accessible and effective.
Through projects like MindFIT and a dedication to research-driven solutions, HelloBetter aims to make mental health care more scalable and personalized, creating a sustainable model for supporting well-being across the lifespan.
