Autarkize Secures €2.3 Million in Seed Funding to Advance Pyrolysis Technology

Funding will accelerate autarkize's efforts in biogas technology and CO2 reduction initiatives

The climate tech startup Autarkize has announced the successful completion of a €2.3 million seed financing round aimed at enhancing its operations in biogas technology and renewable energy generation. Founded in Pfronten, Autarkize is dedicated to decarbonizing industrial processes and creating large-scale CO2 sinks to contribute positively to global climate protection.

Funding Round Details

The financing was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), a prominent investor in early-stage technology companies. Other notable participants in this funding round included the Dutch impact investor Fair Capital Impact Fund, Interface Capital, Innovation for Impact, and Floris Capital, along with renowned business angels Lucas von Fürstenberg and Ulrich Blessing. This infusion of capital will enable Autarkize to scale its operations and bring its innovative systems to market more effectively.

Technology Overview

Autarkize has developed a groundbreaking pyrolysis technology that converts biogenic residues—such as wood waste, peelings, and fermentation residues—into renewable gas and certified biochar. The renewable gas produced from this process can effectively replace fossil fuels in various industrial applications, while the biochar serves as a sustainable method for CO2 storage. Additionally, the biochar can be utilized in agriculture and construction, creating multiple avenues for environmental benefit.

Each Autarkize facility has the capacity to sequester between 1,400 and 5,500 tons of CO2 annually while generating up to 10 GWh of renewable energy. This dual function positions Autarkize as a key player in the ongoing battle against climate change, addressing both energy needs and carbon emissions.

Leadership Insights

Michel Konder, CEO of Autarkize, expressed his enthusiasm for the new funding, stating, "Thanks to the financing, we can bring our systems to market on a large scale, offer our customers real added value, and at the same time make an important contribution to climate protection. Autarkize is excellently positioned to play a leading role in the energy transition."

Autarkize’s modular systems are designed for installation in shipping containers, allowing for outputs of up to 2.5 megawatts. This portable setup enables easy integration into existing biogas plants and industrial processes. The technology also offers significant potential for decarbonizing heating networks, making it especially beneficial for municipal and regional district heating systems.

Investor Perspectives

Maximilian Scholz, Investment Manager at HTGF, highlighted the transformative potential of Autarkize's technology, noting, "We see enormous potential in the use of previously unused waste streams and biomass, which are converted into high-quality synthesis gas and biochar thanks to the innovative pyrolysis technology. This solution not only creates climate-neutral energy but also makes a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions."

Patrick Knodel, CEO of Innovation for Impact, emphasized the importance of sustainable solutions in today's climate. He remarked, "Solutions that enable humanity to operate sustainably within planetary boundaries and that are driven by determined founders with strong technical expertise. Autarkize meets all these criteria."

Michelle de Rijk, an impact investor at Fair Capital Impact Fund, echoed these sentiments, stating, "The technology of Autarkize is a decisive step towards greater resilience to the effects of climate change. This investment fits perfectly with our energy transition program, which aims to create long-term positive change for people and the planet."

Future Directions

With this fresh capital, Autarkize plans to accelerate the development and deployment of its pyrolysis systems, further enhancing its commitment to decarbonization and sustainable energy production. The startup aims to expand its reach both nationally and internationally, solidifying its position as a leading player in the climate tech sector.

As the world faces increasing pressure to transition to more sustainable energy sources, companies like Autarkize are essential in driving innovation and creating impactful solutions. By transforming waste into valuable resources, Autarkize not only addresses the energy crisis but also contributes to the global fight against climate change.

The successful seed financing round marks a significant milestone for Autarkize, propelling its mission to innovate in biogas technology and renewable energy production. As the startup prepares to scale its operations, it remains focused on delivering real value to its customers while playing a pivotal role in the global energy transition. With strong backing from notable investors and a dedicated team, Autarkize is poised to make a lasting impact on the climate tech landscape.
