AllFocal Optics secures funding to advance innovative lens technology for AR and VR applications
AllFocal Optics, a groundbreaking startup based in Cambridge, UK, has announced a $5.3 million funding round aimed at bringing its innovative lens technology to the mass market. The funding, consisting of $3.6 million in equity and $1.7 million in grants, was led by SpeedInvest and supported by several notable investors, including 7PC Ventures, Another.VC, Martlet Capital, and former professional footballer Mario Götze. Innovate UK also contributed through its grant funding program.
With this investment, AllFocal is set to advance its work in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) lenses, a technology that has the potential to significantly reduce discomfort and motion sickness, often experienced by users of existing AR and VR devices.
Revolutionary Lenses for a Growing Industry
Founded in 2022, AllFocal Optics is focused on solving one of the most persistent challenges in the AR and VR space: user discomfort due to nausea and dizziness. Many current AR and VR headsets suffer from a fixed focal length, which forces users’ eyes to constantly adjust as they interact with objects at different distances. This mismatch between the brain's expectations and what the eyes are experiencing is often the root cause of the discomfort that limits the widespread adoption of these technologies.
AllFocal's lenses are designed to project an image directly onto the user’s retina, keeping it in focus regardless of where the user looks or how their eyes move. This novel technology, which does not require moving parts, has been hailed as "magical" by Ash Saulsbury, the new chair of AllFocal and former head of Meta’s AR program. Saulsbury, who has also served as Vice President of Technology at Microsoft, emphasized that the company's approach is a revolutionary step forward for the AR/VR industry.
The Road to Commercialization
The $5.3 million funding will allow AllFocal to continue its development and take its technology closer to commercialization. The company is particularly focused on overcoming two key hurdles: ensuring the lens can be perfectly aligned to the user’s eyes and minimizing the weight and bulkiness of headsets that incorporate the lenses. While the exact solutions remain under wraps, AllFocal has made significant progress on both fronts, with plans to further miniaturize the technology in the coming years.
Despite being a young company, AllFocal has already made strides in developing proof-of-concept projects with various clients. The startup has also signed a major partnership with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which will see the first trials of the AR lenses take place in early 2025. CEO Pawan Shretha has indicated that the company will need to raise between £10 million and £15 million in the next two years to fully scale up its manufacturing and reach a broader consumer base.
